I may have fixed it by entirely removing then reinstalling psa-proftpd from ART. yum reinstall did not fix, but removal and reinstall *so far* has been good.

This server that I've been having on-and-off crashing battles with for months... now that qmail-scanner is off of it, life has gotten much better. I offloaded most email services elsewhere, and just use this for outgoing email lists that are tied in directly to the website software.

I can relate to the OP's frustration. qmail-scanner + clamd + spamassassin is simply to heavy to run in a shared hosting environment. I dealt with that a few years ago. They were fairly easy to phone up and talk to. The process we needed to go through was getting on their whitelist, for sending out our double-opt-in subscriber list. The whole subnet is a bit aggressive!
