Release announcement for CentOS-5.5 i386 and x86_64

Unread post by BruceLee »

The Release Notes for CentOS-5.5 can be found on-line at :
http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS5.5

Thought a topic for any experience people make with CentOS-5.5 might be a good idea.
I will make an update of CentOS-5.5 in the next two weeks.

Of the new packages, only httpd looks like it has any potential to cause problems (not that it necessarily will - only that it is the most likely).

If you are on Plesk 8.x remember to back up suexec before upgrading, then copy it back over the "new" one as otherwise cgi scrips will stop working.

Does Plesk 9.x do this automatically somehow, or is it something that will haunt Plesk installs for all eternity?

For 1and1 at any rate, we had difficulty getting a plesk key for an AOOI'd system running Centos 5.5. Im waiting for word if that ever got resolved. If you do AOOI a box it seems to me that if you install plesk 9.0 first on centos 5.5, get a key, then upgrade to 9.5.

I've upgraded six boxes to CentOS 5.5 so far. All went fine, but none of those were running Plesk or ASL.

Scott was testing AOOI on my box.

And yes, Scott was able to get AOOI to work on the box, under, I believe, local install.

PLESK 9.5 would not pull license keys, and there's one thing that I did not try at the time -- editing and fixing /etc/hosts -- which was not correctly setup. I don't fully understand what retrieving plesk keys entails - but I'm assuming its rather simple and just looks at ip address and host name.

So at any rate, Scott suggested to reinstall PSA 9.0 and to make sure to remove /var/lib/mysql

I'm going to assume that he meant to remove the plesk databases from there. Not to literally remove that folder.

Thus, I messed up and realized it. I had no luck with installing PSA 9.0 due to that, thus reimaged with one of 1and1's images. Tried AOOI with an out of the box CentOS 5.0 64-Bit install and this time around, the default yum repo installed on 1and1's image was no bueno and AOOI wouldn't install as it couldn't download some of the needed resources.

I decided to go ahead and make sure that I had my PLESK key - so I could make a local copy and just HAVE it.

Guess what? Vanilla 1and1 setup --

Key Update Status
Reseller master key can no longer be used

--

So =) -- I called tech and they contacted Parallels and I'm waiting for this to be resolved.

After getting the key, I'm going to first upgrade to PSA 9.5 and make sure that my key works with 1and1, then it's time to try out AOOI again and see if everything falls into place!

What I have experienced with 1and1 and plesk keys is following.

Install e.g. the 1and1 default CentOS image with Plesk9.
Log in to Plesk and fill out everything correctly.
Than you'll "receive" the correct keyfiles. Double check under license settings in Plesk. (Hit "retrieve keys" to make sure)
Under /etc/sw/keys you will find a directory/file structure that you have to backup.
Then run AOOI and install Plesk afterwards. Copy the backup file/dir structure back to /etc/sw/keys.
Ready!
The reason is that 1and1 images are imaged on disk without the keys. So you have to make the procedure first to retrieve them. If you don't do that you have no license. If you use the license after one month (or after the renew period) the license has expired and than the keys won't work either. So AOOI quickly and then use the keys.

1and1 is a provider.

You should ask the provider who provides you with the Plesk 9 key if you want to know if an update to Plesk 9.5 is possible.
Some providers "block" their keys until they have checked everything.

This is what I'm planning on doing... still can't 'retrieve keys' on a vanilla 1and1 setup, so as I said, I called, they checked and they apparently contacted SW Soft and I'm still waiting =(

Im messing around with KVM on C5.5 right now. Shortcut to see if your system supports hardware virtualization:

egrep '(vmx|svm)' --color=always /proc/cpuinfo
