SSL ""Problem""

My certificate is single root. How can I make plesk not to forward me from mydomain.com:8443 to host.mydomain.com ? Because when it does that ... The user gets the error for ssl wrong url.

I assume you mean for your actual plesk server (the control panel)?

If so you must have host.domain.name in the FQDN hostname in setup of your plesk. In this case rename it to just domain.name

I thought of doing so. But this will mess up a series of other things apart from plesk as you know ...

I think I'll probably buy another single rooted certificate just for the plesk url ...

But for the webmail ... Can I change its path from webmail.mydomain.com to mydomain.com/webmail in order not to get another certificate ? Havent found a way yet ... Any ideas ?

yes the Plesk host name is what the CP uses.

If you do use webmail or plan to along with your website why not do a wildcard SSL?

I use a wildcard SSL plus you can subdomain as well as future expansion or changes as it will match any name *.domain.name

Godaddy has the cheapest wildcard around so keep of in mind. My certificate I set up a sub name for the server that is FQDN, plus I got SSL webmail.domain and use secure logins on my forum.

Just to add to this -- wildcard SSL certs are VERY cheap these days. Essentially you can now buy a wildcard SSL cert for less that it costs to buy a normal SSL cert from some sources.

We resell the StarField (Godaddy) certs and we use them ourselves. No problems. All 100% perfect (apart from the purchasing process, which is a bit convoluted in my opinion and could do with being a bit more user friendly).

The bottom line is that these days SSLs are more to do with securing data transmission than proving identity. This is good news for people who just want an SSL cert and aren't interested in all the bells and whistles that go with them.

Of course it also means people who don't look where they are going when using their computers are more easily fooled by phishing sites. There's always a downside.

Godaddy sells the wildcard ssl for 200usd per year.
I wanted to do it cheaper not because I do not wish to pay. But just because as you said ssl certs today are only used to secure the connection without the crazy warnings that make users get afraid.

I get the single root from dynadot 15usd. half price compared to goaddy !
I will get another for the hostname of the machine.
All I need is to find a way to move the webmail from webmail.domain to domain/webmail.
Has anyone done this ?
Or I can always get a third ssl single root for webmail but how do I link through plesk the ssl certificate with the webmail ?

The Apache configuration for webmail.*.* can be found in /etc/httpd/conf.d/zz010_psa_httpd.conf. You could create a new file in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ and setup a server-wide alias for /webmail and point that to the Horde installation. You could also disable webmail in Plesk so webmail.*.* is no longer available and your clients will need to use /webmail.

You could also install another webmail package and alias that under /webmail. For instance SquirrelMail does this by default.
