Squirrelmail message window blank

I thought all was going well with my freshly installed squirrelmail 1.4.4-3 from art. However, after trying to log in on about the second day of using it I cannot see any message contents. I can see the message list, but when I click on the message to see the contents I get only the sender info at the top but the main message window is blank. I can actually access the contents of the message by clicking on the 'printable version' button.

I upgraded my php to the latest from art yesterday, but everything else seems to be working correctly so I don't know if that's related.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Are you by any chance using php 5.0?

How about Zend? I've seen problems with the latest version and Tikiwiki that were similar to this.

Zend is installed. Are you suggesting that I might upgrade it... or get rid of it?
