I'd go with forwarding the server's root email, that way you are sure to get other messages for root as well.

Are you running the SA from Scott's repos?

Do you have any other SA addons or other vendor's antispam products also on the server (4psa or others)?

What firewall (and related software) are you using, and have you tried temporarily disabling it and test connection speed?

Strange, all of my qmail-scanner logs have entries which show the from and to like:

And AFAIR I didn't have to change any of the log settings after installation.

Yup, I know it's insane, but if I go any lower, a major client has too many false positives (not AWL, not Bayes, etc.) Already checked/tried all other things, so I just leave it at 12. Did you try the following command:

cat /etc/sysconfig/spamassassin

??

It could be due to differences between the 'standard' SA package and the one you currently have installed. If you don't have that file now, you should after you uninstall the current one and install the one from ART's site.
