This can happen when mysql is upgraded or stopped incorrectly. If you run /usr/bin/safe_mysqld it will recreate the sock file and restart mysql for you.

I am also on FC2/plesk 7.5, and noticed the same thing. I turned up the debugging on a yum check-update.
