yum upgrade vs yum update

Unread post by faris »

In another topic, there has been some discussion about using yum upgrade as opposed to yum update and how they do different things.

But do they really do something different these days?

I had done some research a while ago and was of the impression that "yum upgrade" was the same as "yum --obsoletes update".
Further, I thought that having "obsoletes=1" in yum.conf, which has been the case for most modern Centos versions for a while, made "--obsoletes" the default for a "yum update".

And so I thought that, as long as you have "obsoletes=1" in yum.conf then yum upgrade and yum update did the same thing.

But the post I mention has got me thinking I may be wrong....

Meh, the yum.conf or whatever settings arent going to be super consistent. Better to assume the worst and save yourself a lot of time.

Oh, so its one of those things. You'd think something as important as software upgrades would not be even slightly unpredictable. :-)

obsoletes=1 has been the default in CentOS for a while. So, yum update == yum upgrade on a CentOS system.

Totally predictable updates imho! :)

Sure. ;-)

"obsoletes=1" is the **default** in /etc/yum.conf. Thus, yum update/upgrade are exactly the same, unless you explicitly told yum otherwise by modifying the yum.conf.
