magic_quote question

Hello,
Firstly, sorry if this question is stupid, but research on google confuses me with the various contradictory responses found.
can you please help me determine the right configuration for magic_quote_gpc?
Following searches google, I found that for safety reasons, must be magic_quote been set to one, unfortunately joomla3 need this variable is set to off to ensure smooth installation.
If I change the directive in php.ini, is there an impact in terms of security?

I'd be very surprised is cpanel didn't have a mechanism that allowed you to change that setting on a per-domain basis. So you could just turn it off for your joomla site.

I'm not sure about the best default settings though.
