Installing ASL kernel

Unread post by zonathen »

Hi guys I chose not to install the kernel for a new digital ocean cloud server and then I realized that it might actually work with the kernel as it doesn't appear to be a vps.

After the standard asl install I tried to install the kernel via the instructions here: https://www.atomicorp.com/wiki/index.ph ... ASL_kernel

But yum keeps saying nothing to install. Definitely not running the kernel. All the repos are there and yum is not excluding it. How do I force this kernel to install?

yum --disableexcludes=all --enablerepo=tortix-kernel upgrade kernel

Interesting digital ocean got back to me:

We do not support the installing of custom kernels on your own, however if you are able to install one of your kernels on your Droplet, we can manually import it and set the system to use it when your Droplet boots.

In order to do so, please open up a support ticket on your account.

so it looks like I need them to have it boot into it. they have what they need right?

Perhaps you have already installed the kernel package? ;-)

Code: Select all

rpm -q kernel | sort

Okay looks like a nogo with digital ocean at this time even though their support said it was possible.. In case anybody else is curious:

----------------
Unfortunately, with our infrastructure, we are unable to boot custom kernels at this time. We are only able to have droplets boot from standard kernels.

Yeah that sounds like they're using xen, and not loading kernels via grub

Weird, I always thought they were using KVM (https://www.digitalocean.com/features/technology/)

Even with Xen, it should be possible to boot your own kernel via PyGrub.

Yeah maybe it is possible but they haven't automated it yet. Sounds like mixed signals so maybe they are doing it manually for some people reluctantly. If it's not built into their provisioning process then it adds manual maintenance that breaks later, like what if I want to upgrade the custom kernel later and so on. I'm guessing the reason they are priced so low is everything is automated so they can keep the staff minimal. Or it's simply a hook and they raise the prices later :)
