Sounds like you own this server. I'd make sure the raid controller firmware and drivers are up to date. I recently had a windows server with 2 drives in raid one and it had a failed drive, replaced the drive and in less than a month the same drive failed again. Updated the firmware on the card, and the driver software for the OS and all seems to be well.
Just something to think about.

True. Problem is, what is the implications if I do upgrade the firmware. Could it possibly screw up the RAID array

No, it won't screw up the firmware, just be sure you use the correct firmware for your hardware and the latest version. Like any upgrade / bios or otherwise, take your time and do it during off peak / scheduled maintenance. Be sure to leave yourself a window in case something horrible goes wrong. Also, talk to the vendor of the hardware, they are always full of knowledge and the gotcha's.
