I tried that early on, they're a huge pain in the ass to maintain. I was doing high file descriptor builds and updates for older distros. One of the problems I ran into that were the number of dependencies youve got to track to get say CentOS 3 up to 2.2. Basically you end up with something closer to CentOS 5 when you're done.
