Upgrading Plesk 8.1 from php 5.0.4 to art 5.1.4..
Upgrading Plesk 8.1 from php 5.0.4 to art 5.1.4..
Hello Everyone,
I'm am a totally newbie, so please forgive me if my terminology is off.
Anyways, I have a FC4 machine running Plesk 8.1. I am in need of upgrading php from 5.0.4 to 5.1.4..
Originally my hosting company helped upgrade php 4.x to 5.0.4 during the initial setup using the art repository, but I did not know about the ART repositories until after I did research on how to upgrade php through the FC repository. I have recently found that using the FC repositories were not the best idea in terms of being friendly with plesk. As of now I have both 5.0.4. and 5.1.4 installed. However, plesk is only recognizing php 5.0.4.
My problem is that I want to update php 5.0.4 with the ART repositories but I believe that the both up2date and yum are seeing php 5.1.4 already installed and is not recognizing/prompting the update to 5.1.4. So my question is how do I go about removing the previously installed rpm from the FC repository and moving forward with the ART 5.1.4 update? Do I have to remove the 5.1.4 before moving forward with the ART rpm? or can I force the update?
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Bennett

FC4 / 64Bit / Yum Errors / Trying to upgrade PHP 5.0.x 5.1.x
I am also a 1and1 customer, and totally confused.
I am on a wonderful adventure. Trying to get server setup for running a very complete Real Estate MLS solution. It's a pure nightmare. It doesn't seem to like PHP 5.0.x for some reason. Example: file_exists() in php is a boolean that let's you see if a file exists or not. The exists, but it still returns false. Tried safe_mode setting changes, blah blah. It's a bug, I am pretty sure. So I want to go to 5.1 (or even 5.2 if I can) and see if it cleans up. Anyway, that's my motivation for this pain.
It's a brand new 1and1 server. 8.1 straight off the image. I know Centos etc. is the play, but I am pressed for time and don't want to add more work to my pile. AMD 64 bit, FC4.
Scott, if you are out there, I am pretty certain a lot of 1and1 customers are going to run into php issues with the Plesk 8.1's default choice. Please help.

Progress
Grrr, retyping this post do to crash on PC.
Ok, I walked through your website to:
http://3es.atomicrocketturtle.com/atomi ... 4/repodata
I then hard coded that directly into my yum.conf by itself with the [main] section still the same. I took out /repodata as that would cause an error of course.
Now I am getting this.
[/etc] yum check-update

My hunch is that it does not know where to get these files because I don't have the base dilo or whatever installed. I am going to try to clean up my yum.conf to include a proper base and see if I can't get it to work.
Standby.
(also, I believe if I want to go to 5.1.x, I have to point to bleeding, no? If so, what is the link for the 64bit?)
Thank you,

I am too afraid to disable dependencies.

Dependency issue - resolved i think.
I think it had to do with the fact that I have an x64 processor and I was trying to install i386?
Anway. Here is my final final question.
How in the heck can I get my dang system up to a higher version of PHP, lol?
I can't find 5.2.1, or anything in bleeding that will give me the love I am looking for. If anyone can help, I would be greatful.
I looked through the forums, found some posts that were close, but couldn't crack the case. Can I install i386 version on my 64bit amd?
Anyway, this is so much fun. Great way to spend a weekend, no? lol.

We havent done 5.2.x yet. Ive been completely focused on ASL lately. Ive got the spec from agruetz though. Part of your problem is that you're on an x86_64 box, and you're installing i386 packages. You can sort of do that, but either way you absolutely have to have access to the Fedora base/updates channel. If those ever break PSA, then thats a bug and sw-soft needs to know about it. When I was designing the RPM release, I always intended it to integrate with the vendor updates. You should never have to disable them for PSA to work.
Side note, Im updating AOOI this weekend so you can put CentOS 4.4 x86_64 on your 1and1 box. I'll post my 1and1 notes on the website today too. Im trying to work out if I can actually take advantage of the hardware raid controller they dont use.

Scott,
Yes, I figured the dependency issue was that. Not looking to make life harder. So frusting.
Are you saying I have to re-image or redo my box with CentOS? Or I can use the CentOS rpms on my FC4 8.1 box?
It sounds like CentOS is the way to go if ART is going to be the base/goto for packages, updates, etc.
Where may I find your notes, I will try to help any way that I can.
Nice talking to you again, it really looks like your site is growing.
