rsync is the application and rsyncd is a service you can run. You can also use rsync over SSH without rsyncd (this is what I use as a backend for BackupPC, although rsyncd, samba and tar are also supported). I think you might benefit from reading about doing backups some more. Google around, check the rsync, rdiff-backup and BackupPC homepages for instance and check the documentation. I'm afraid the topic is a bit too broad to turn you into a backup pro through these forums.
