I think you better use the init scripts. See if you can stop spamd using 'service spamassassin stop'. If that fails and there are still spamd processes running after that, kill those. See if 'service spamassassin start' starts up OK. You could run 'qmail-scanner-reconfigure' afterwards for good measure.
