Upfgrade suggetions Postgres 7.3.x to 8.x

Hello,
I've got a PlesK 7.5.4 server on CentOS 3.3 running postgresql-server 7.3.15-2. the client needs to upgrade postgresql-server to v8.x. I've searched ll over the place, found some rpms etc. also some instructions, but none of them worked.
In most cases the packages got installed, but PostGres wouldn't start nor did it show up under 'installed components' and wasn't manageable via PlesK.
Anyone go some got suggestions, or better: solutions?
