Hello There...

Can anyone recommend a good webhost... right now we have

3 boxes at power medium/candid
1 box at OLM
3 at marlin webhosting

We are looking to try out a new datacenter... right now we are looking at The Planet... does anyone have any input

I have 1 with LayeredTech and it's been great... Not very expensive and 99,9% uptime with a great network.

PS: It's unmanaged, but it's great.

Yes, and they use to make good offers every 15 days or so... If you are not in a hurry just wait until you get a good one. Keep an eye on their announcements forum.

Yeah, i am going to keep an eye on them... we are looking at Cari.net also.. they have some high setup fees but i like the way they do their bandwidth billing on averages and not 95th % tile

The Planet is awesome!

We've been with The Planet for three years now and haven't had better anywhere else. Even when they schedule potential downtime, it never seems to actually go down, and there has never been unscheduled downtime at all.

Their orbit control panel is wonderful - with literally everything you would need right there, and the new theme is really cool.

You get excellent support, although we only bother them when we're completely out of any new ideas or ways to fix a problem, and even though we don't pay for extra support they always give it a shot (and most of the time fix the problem).

I'm not sure how standard this is, but you get service monitoring - so we get an email whenever the load goes over 5 or port 80 stops responding to requests, etc. Plus you can specify escalation procedures in case it stays down - ie what tel #'s to call, etc.

We had a server with Server Beach for a few months as well and I can tell you, it didn't come close in terms of support and mostly features... so I like to use whatever chance I can to let others know how good it is!

Have you checked The Planet recently? In the last few days they have completely redesigned their site, server options, and the Orbit control panel. I've had a server there for nearly 3 years, tech support has dramatically gone downhill in the last year. I am going to need an upgraded server soon and will probably not stay with The Planet/EV1.

I was looking at the planet until I read all the bad things happening lately.

I also looked at layeredtech but chose softlayer in the end. Until last week we were all 1and1 for the past 3-4 years, but finally got sick of the non american ip range.

I've been with Rackshack/EV1Servers for over 6 years and always had good service, since the merger of The Planet and EV1Servers some EV1'ers have had some dicey experiences mostly due to culture shock and the fact that Headsurfer left along with a lot of the management team that was EV1Servers.

As far as Servers/Prices/Service goes with this new company.. Time will tell, I've no plans on moving from them atm and will probably stay with them in the future unless something major changes in CS / Business Model.

So, Read the forums for the various Datacenters and see what others are saying. If the forums are active then that might be a good sign. I know that before the merger of the two message boards, folks on the EV1Servers boards were complaining some about procedures and such, some had ligit beefs others seemed to be complaining that things weren't happening like they used to etc. Just seemed to me that folks were more complaining about the merger and such and that they didn't get a say in the deal. EV1 always had that small company feel to it and now they are one of the big boys on the block, not that they weren't before.

I had good luck with theplanet/servermatrix. I had two self-managed servers with them for about 2 1/2 years before migrating over to cari.net (mainly due to my budget).

I've been on cari.net for about 8 months and so far they have been good!

kind of expensive but really good is serverbeach.net.

I used them for about a year the the drive on the box died.

They reimaged a box for me but I didn't really need it anymore.

One more vote for The Planet/EV1 here.

They were fast, their hardware choices are great. The server runs super smooth. Lots of choices for OS and Management console. And the price is great for almost everything.

Yea Scott, they did do that, and in Hind site the Old HeadSurfer apologized for that move. This new organization.. jury is still out.

Indeed he did, to me personally in fact, which was a very classy move on his part. He even went so far as to offer me free servers for ART development. I didn't take EV1 up on that though, since I wasn't really comfortable with something like that from a big hosting company.

The only donated system I'm using right now is from rackspace (3es.atomicrocketturtle.com). That came from their tech support people, and because we were always very close with Rackspace at plesk. In fact Rackspace had pretty much aquired Plesk in 2000. The version of PSA that everyone uses today is due in large part to Rackspace and a design hammered out between Dirk Elemendorf , Tom Weeks and I.
