qmail madness

Hi -

I am running Plesk 8.6.0 on CentOS 4, with qmail-scanner from ART. Works great ! The issue is that I have been seeing my CPU load go up as more and more spam hits the server. the server.

The question I have is, why are spam mails to non-existent users getting to clamav and spamassassin ? I have confirmed that there is no "catch-all" enabled on these domains, so the servers should just reject the mail at the "rcpt-to" command itself, instead of accepting the mail and sending it to qmail-scanner. Am I missing some config related to qmail ?

Regards,
Anwar.

It depends on whether you have your domains set to bounce or drop (reject) those emails. If you have them set to reject I guess those emails shouldn't go through your scanners.

funny (not)... I just noticed that plesk by default did not enable the reject option for all domains..

Yep, they were set to "bounce" instead of "reject". After setting them to "reject", the load on the server has improved.

It is pretty lame that the default option is not "reject". Hope they fix this in one of the upcoming releases.

If you don't like the bounce option set Server > Interface Management > Interface Templates > Preferences > Hide controls for bounce messages for non-existent mail addresses, so you can't set domains to bounce anymore. :)

we migrated a bunch of domains from one plesk to a new one and it did not enable the reject for the migrated domains, keep this in mind.
