Load Problems

Centos 5, ASL, on a Xen virtualized machine.
I'm having some issues where the server becomes inaccessible by SSH and HTTP, but still pingable. I had disabled rootkit checks on ossec because those would spike the resource usage once per hour, and I hoped that would stop the problem.
Still having it, what would you guys do to investigate it? I'm planning on moving to a real hardware server ASAP, but in the mean time figured I'd see if anyone has quick ideas for me
