Nucleus repository

Unread post by BruceLee »

Hi,

stumbled across a post and the Nucelus repo and have a few questions regarding this repo:
-as an ASL customer do I have access to this repo or I is it separated?
-if not is there maybe a discount for ASL customers?
-what is the difference between the packages compared to Atomic repo?
-will Atomic repo be maintained regarding those packages or will it be dropped?
-in general: is Nucleus just for the 5.4 transition?

thanks a lot

Code: Select all

-as an ASL customer do I have access to this repo or I is it separated?
Its a separate repo, there will be another open repo called quantum as well. This will be the opposite of nucleus, containing all the emerging technologies.

Code: Select all

-if not is there maybe a discount for ASL customers?
Thats a great idea, I'll pass it on.

Code: Select all

-what is the difference between the packages compared to Atomic repo?
Nucleus - trailing technologies (example: php 5.3)
Atomic - current technology (example: php 5.4) / things that dont exist in the base OS (example: openvas)
Quantum - emerging technologies (example: php 5.5, mariadb that obsoletes mysql)

Code: Select all

-what is the difference between the packages compared to Atomic repo?
Nucleus will be for "trailing" releases of popular packages. PHP 5.3 is a good example, as is Openvas 4.x because newer openvas doesnt work on EL5. I can foresee many other projects having compatibility issues with EL5 platforms updates come out. I can especially see this happen with something like node.js

Code: Select all

-will Atomic repo be maintained regarding those packages or will it be dropped?
Atomic will continue on with a package based on its supportability in the mainstream. Its always going to be the main repo, it will always have the most packages in one place. Nucleus and Quantum are to fill the gaps for something that breaks that norm, like EOL'd PHP.

Code: Select all

-in general: is Nucleus just for the 5.4 transition?
At the moment, yes that is what it contains. Other packages that I can see ending up in there, based on upstream changes are:

* Openvas 3.0, for EL5. Openvas 4 and above are not compatible with EL5
* Mysql 5.5, Atomic will transition to mysql 5.6 eventual and someday, MariaDB will obsolete it
* Node.js, which hasn't shown up in atomic yet, but will. The language changes often, so I see this as one that would live in quantum/atomic/nucleus

Is there any progress yet? I'm feeling a bit exposed with .26 and I really want to correct this ASAP.

Slight error in the wiki -- Centos 6 instructions are identical to Centos 5 including pointing to centos 5 rpm rather than the centos 6 one.

Just wanted to let you know that the Nucleus PHP 5.3 repository is working great.

Some notes regarding the installation howto:
- if you are already using the Atomic channel (do not forget to exclude php*!) you can also do "yum install nucleus-release".
- if not, you can use wget to download the rpm file over https and use "yum localinstall nucleus-release-VERSION.rpm" to install via yum. This is useful as this will also log the installation to your yum.log as opposed to directly installing the package via rpm.
