CentOS Continuous Release Repository

Unread post by breun »

The CentOS-5.6 Continuous Release ( CR ) repository is now available on mirror.centos.org. This repository contains rpms to be included in the next CentOS-5.x release. Because these include security and bugfix updates, we strongly recommend everyone using CentOS-5 install and update their system using this repository.

I don't "get" this.

Is it a change in philisophy or what? The CR repo contains security updates. Why are they not being released immediately in the normal repo? Why do they have to wait until the next point release?

Or to turn it on its head, if we are all meant to change to using the CR repo, what's the point of the non-CR repo?

Probably a response to the criticism of their lack of timeliness & transparency in updates.

Hi Faris,

Its pretty much as Scott says, the CR repo contains the work-to-date of the rpms updated from the next point release from upstream.

So a CR repo only gets created after a new upstream point release (ie we've seen 5.7 and 6.1) _and_ Centos have updated some but not yet all of the rpms in the new release.

The idea is that you will get the updates as they are finished rather than having to wait for all the updates to be done and for the ISOs to be created and tested.

I didn't setup the 5.7 CR as there was some woolly information about moving away from it afterwards but that all seems to have been a non-issue and it works fine, we have a few test Centos 6 servers so I'll be setting up the CR for them on Monday.

Paul.
