Centos + ASL Best for New 1and1 server?

Unread post by damon »

I've ordered one of the new Business I Linux servers to replace an old Root Server III. Since I can start from scratch I want to get everything as right as possible.

What would you suggest? I've read your review of the server and the problems you found, is Centos and ASL ready for these servers?

Any suggestions for how I should proceed will be appreciated.

ASL is yes, there is still some work to be done on AOOI for those boxes with the network module. Its fixable, it's just going to be a few more weeks. I'm debating the merits of just waiting for CentOS5 and continuing AOOI development on that.

New server is ready (Business 1 64bit)

Unread post by damon »

I've got the new server I'm trying to figure out if I should just start using it as it is. I need to transfer domains from an old 1and1 root server with RH9 and Plesk 7.16, I think that FC4 and Plesk 8 has to be a major improvement from that.

Are there instructions for setting the server up with Centos 4 if your AOOI isnt' ready? How much would it cost to get you or another expert to set it up right?

If you call reading the script instructions, then yes. :P

If you call reading the script instructions, then yes.
It can be, depending on the script. 8)

I'm not sure what you mean though, I've read your posts about the new servers and AOOI and understood that it's not available for them and you may skip Centos 4 and wait for 5?

Have I got things confused? Is there a set of scripts that just aren't "packaged"? It's no installing the OS that bothers me so much as the combination of the OS and Plesk, and the complication of the 64bit versions.

Just need some guidance or I need to be satisfied with FC4 and get going.

Thanks,

Damon

Well heres the problem, the CentOS 4 cd does not have the right driver on it for the network card used in those systems. So you can install it, but the network wont work, in fact it cant even see the card.

So to fix it you could either:
1) install the ASL kernel, which does
2) create a kmod package for the newer driver
3) test out some newer CentOS kernels to see if they work with it

All 3 options involve getting packages on a system with no network, basically you'd have to either get them into swap before the install, or relay them through the rescue image. Before I go down that path though (and I will if I have to), I want to see if CentOS5 works cleanly on the system. If it does, than I'm going to option #4 which is to get PSA 8.1 to work on CentOS5, which Im reasonably confident wont be much trouble.

Yep thats it all right. Good find! I hadn't considered this is a failure inside of anaconda, if thats all it is then in fact CentOS4 does work just fine on that hardware.

So is it possible to fix centos 4 for the new 1and1 servers ?

I presume this is whats causing this error:
After placing in the /dev/sdb2 (old swap partition) and rebooting into the centos install program I am met with:-
"Welcome to CentoS 4.4Server" followed by the first few installation screens -Language Selection
- Installation Method ( hard drive)
- select Parition (F2 pressed to bring up disk sdb)
- disk driver source - /dev/sdb2 selected)
- Select driver (CDCentOS-4.4.ServerCD-x86_64.iso)
install exited abnormally

I think the trick here to get around it is to disable the network configuration part in the ks.cfg, and enable it in the post installation script instead.
