Centos + ASL Best for New 1and1 server?
Centos + ASL Best for New 1and1 server?
I've ordered one of the new Business I Linux servers to replace an old Root Server III. Since I can start from scratch I want to get everything as right as possible.
What would you suggest? I've read your review of the server and the problems you found, is Centos and ASL ready for these servers?
Any suggestions for how I should proceed will be appreciated.

New server is ready (Business 1 64bit)
I've got the new server I'm trying to figure out if I should just start using it as it is. I need to transfer domains from an old 1and1 root server with RH9 and Plesk 7.16, I think that FC4 and Plesk 8 has to be a major improvement from that.
Are there instructions for setting the server up with Centos 4 if your AOOI isnt' ready? How much would it cost to get you or another expert to set it up right?

It can be, depending on the script. If you call reading the script instructions, then yes.

I'm not sure what you mean though, I've read your posts about the new servers and AOOI and understood that it's not available for them and you may skip Centos 4 and wait for 5?
Have I got things confused? Is there a set of scripts that just aren't "packaged"? It's no installing the OS that bothers me so much as the combination of the OS and Plesk, and the complication of the 64bit versions.
Just need some guidance or I need to be satisfied with FC4 and get going.
Thanks,
Damon

Well heres the problem, the CentOS 4 cd does not have the right driver on it for the network card used in those systems. So you can install it, but the network wont work, in fact it cant even see the card.
So to fix it you could either:
1) install the ASL kernel, which does
2) create a kmod package for the newer driver
3) test out some newer CentOS kernels to see if they work with it
All 3 options involve getting packages on a system with no network, basically you'd have to either get them into swap before the install, or relay them through the rescue image. Before I go down that path though (and I will if I have to), I want to see if CentOS5 works cleanly on the system. If it does, than I'm going to option #4 which is to get PSA 8.1 to work on CentOS5, which Im reasonably confident wont be much trouble.
