Plesk license key woes

Unread post by tomkerswill »

Hey everyone!

I reimaged my 1and1 server today. When it came back up, I installed asl 2. I then went through and upgraded Plesk version-by-version, from 8.0 through 8.2. Everything went swimmingly.

When I came to add domains, I realised there was no license key in Plesk, except for the default (which only allows one domain). I think this is an error from 1and1, since I'm pretty sure they're meant to provide one on the server when it's reimaged. Clicking the "Retrieve License Keys" button on Plesk gave the response:

plesk Server response: Key Authorization Problem

Nothing I can think of can get the key back (and a quick look at /etc/psa/psa.key* reveals none of the keys here are correct).

So - quick question. Whilst I wait for 1and1 to get back to me, is it okay to steal the Plesk key from my second / backup server? I've tried uploading this key and it works - all is working fine with both servers... It's a temporary measure until I can retrieve the correct key from 1and1, but does anyone know if this might cause problems with either server? (the key expires in a couple of weeks - by which time hopefully 1and1 will have replied ;-) )

Thanks in advance

Tom

If they detect your key being used on multiple machines they most likely will revoke the key...

I'd like to echo breun - don't use the key twice. Plesk phones home often enough to make this a real concern. You could always ask the SWsoft folks for a temp key. They are pretty free with them if you can demonstrate the need.

Hey guys
Thanks for the help! In the end 1and1 were actually incredibly helpful (this is in fact the first time they've ever been helpful) and uploaded a new key for me. Something had gone wrong in the Plesk update somewhere I think, but I'll never know where! Thanks for the advice on keys though - I'll ask for a temp one from Plesk next time methinks!
