which os i should use?

Unread post by zdena »

hello to all,

currently i have server with debian 3.1, php4.x, mysql, plesk 8.2 and now planing to open new server.

after researching for last few days, i've realized that my debian is not classic debina :) it is plesk with debian, so i can't (or i don't know how to) how to update some *nix modules

i wonder if other distros has same config or what?
does plesk came with *nix distros or just as soft i can install without affecting to my current distors?

and finally, what os i should install on my new machine? and maybe which control panel?

thanks in advance

What you mean by not being able to update "*nix modules"? What do you want to update exactly?

Plesk is not distributed by any Linux distribution, it is only distributed by SWsoft. See the website for documentation, what distributions are supported, etc.

You should install whatever distribution you're comfortable with, provided that it provides you with the software (versions) you require. We are big fans of CentOS (free of charge, long lifecycle, supported by ART).

i know that, but it seems that plesk is coming in bundle with some distros, so i assumed that swsoft team selling plesk+OS as plesk control panel

that's what i was asking :) i was thinking to move to centos but wasn't sure about it

do you maye use plesk+centos, or just centos? any control panel for managing around 100 domains, not as hosting company...we are developers and need space for our clients, their mails, docs, etc....

thanks in advance

If you're looking for flexibility, the RPM based distros are the way to go. They use what the vendor distributes, which means that you can upgrade php, mysql, etc with yum, or up2date.

The debian build I suspect is based on our old monolithic "standard" design, which was a self contained, and does not let you easily upgrade the system.

Anyway, my 2 cents, CentOS is the way to go. Its the best server distribution out there.

But you're saying you can't use apt to update your system? I believe you should be able to do that, regardless of Plesk being installed or not.

We use CentOS+Plesk on most of our servers. We like CentOS and our clients like Plesk, so that's what we go with mostly.
