YUM install/remove general question

Unread post by amit290 »

Hey,

My system is running quite happily so I'm just after some general information on installing and removing programs via YUM. I have clamd, qmail-scanner, maildrop, clamav (and freshclam) on my system from the YUM repository. I wanted to re-install these programs.

Is yum remove suppose to remove everything about the above packages?
I tried "i.e. ./yum remove clamav" and there were still traces of the programs on my system such as the conf files, clamav database, freshclam cron job.

I manually deleted everything I could find, but when I re-installed it did not re-install everything. I didnt have a cron job for freshclam (cron.daily). I had to run ./freshclam to retrieve the databases or clamav wouldnt start. A log file was missing in "/var/clamav/". I'm fairly sure that the first time round all I did was "yum install <program>" and everything just worked.

So can someone tell me if YUM remove <program> is suppose to remove everything installed by that program? and why YUM install <program> may not have re-installed all the files that were installed the first time around? Does YUM have some sort of database/history file so it logs what is installed/removed and so does not try re-copying some files so it doesnt over write them.

Hope my question makes sense
Thanks
