Where to upload website files?

Hi all! I'm a newbie and really frustrated one at that! Here is my question/problem (please no eye rolls).
I bought a website with all the files/content.
I was told to ftp ALL my websites files/content to the HTTP.DOCS directory, and make SURE that the index.html file is in there. O.k. I did all that, but my site is still not published. When you google the domain name the domain shows up but no content appears.
Might the problem be that I have to differentiate my websites wordpress(content) files from the other files....and then upload just wp content files to MSQL?
What files get uploaded where?
Yes, I am way over my head in this, but love learning!

If its a new domain name it could take a day or two for the DNS changes to go into effect. That would absolutely prevent you from being able to see it
