PSA and qmail

Unread post by philb »

Just curious. How does Plesk get away with distributing qmail altered and compiled? This is counter to the license that everyone has as far as I know.

Referring to [link]http://cr.yp.to/qmail/dist.html[/link] leaves me thinking that Plesk has changed qmail's behavior.

Am I crazy? It seems nearly impossible to modify the qmail system without breaking the plesk hooks. I'd like to know how I can do things like rebuild qmail with some of the fine mods that are out there for it.

Does such information exist?

We asked Dan Bernstien about the way we put qmail together for years at plesk, and he never responded (email, phonecalls, etc). As far as I know the folks at sw-soft keep asking as well.

I had been pushing to switch over to postfix since 2.0, but it just hadn't been a priority. Hopefully that will be supported in 8.0. At any rate, if you want the source for it, just send an email to support. I used to send the code to people all the time.

I ran postfix for years before PSA and I liked it a lot.

Thanks for your response re getting the source code, I'll try that.

By the way, I believe I bought the first commercial Plesk license. I met the owners at the 1999 Apachecon where they had not purchased a booth but were just walking around. We made the deal right there on the floor of the show. It sure has advanced beautifully since then.

Yeah that was probably from Todd I'll bet. Back then it was pretty much just him and Dimitri here in the US.

Yes, it was Todd and Dimitri.

I went to Apachecon specifically looking for server admin software and didn't find any. My friend Bill and I were standing at about the middle of the room and struck up a conversation with these two strangers and that's when we discovered they were there with the software that we were looking for. Dimitri had just come over to the US and they didn't know if they wanted to get a booth or not, but then found out it was too late and they didn't have any way to put signs up, etc.

We struck an excellent deal on the price and I sent them a check the next day. Had it installed that week. I still call Todd at least once a year to see how things are going. Nice guy.
